Great Keppel Island sits eighteen kilometres offshore from Yeppoon, ringed by seventeen beaches and seventeen square kilometres of coral reef surveyed since the 1970s as part of the Capricorn-Bunker Group.
The island's fringing reefs rise from eight to twenty metres depth, their shallow ledges hosting staghorn corals, brain corals, and more than two hundred recorded fish species including trevally, parrotfish, barramundi cod, and seasonal green sea turtles that nest on the northern beaches between November and March. Access depends entirely on ferry schedules and weather windows, as the island has no permanent jetty for private vessels. Guided snorkeling adventures include equipment, reef briefings, and lunch service on the beach, while self-guided options allow visitors arriving on the public ferry to hire masks and fins from beach kiosks. The marine park zoning permits snorkeling in all green zones surrounding the island, but anchoring and fishing are regulated to protect nesting sites and juvenile fish nurseries in the mangrove inlets.
